The Regan Lab; Synthetic Proteins for Synthetic Biology

Proteins perform myriad functions in every living organism, and it is now possible to manipulate existing proteins and design new proteins at will. We are applying this expertise to create novel protein-based materials, in which the macroscopic properties of the material are specified by the design of their protein components. We are also co-opting natural proteins with very distinctive physical properties to create new supramolecular structures and surfaces, with biosensor and other applications. Finally, we are applying our expertise in protein-protein interactions to design powerful new ways to post-translationally label, or modulate the activity of, proteins within living cells.
